Online sales in the UK will rise by 40% to £42 billion in 2007, up from £30 billion in 2006.
Daily Telegraph, January 2007.
The strong forecast comes in the wake of the biggest ever month for online sales.
The Interactive Media in Retail group (IMRG) says the expected 40% growth reflects rocketing broadband penetration and a growing acceptance of the internet as a secure method of shopping.
More consumers are getting broadband. It is huge. When people have broadband they shop online, it is a simple as that.
Online shopping is no longer the preserve of the young. Royal Mail research released in December 2006 shows that the 45 - 54 year olds are the biggest online spenders.
Joint research project from Handbag, iVillage and Generator exploring the online habits and attitudes of women, also reveal just how central the internet is in the lives of the UK's women.
48% of regular internet users are female, with 14.4 million women accessing the internet every month in the UK. Guy Phillipson, Chief Executive of the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) said of the findings of the study, "This research proves that the internet suits the lifestyle of the 'modern woman' perfectly. They love the convenience and sense of community the medium offers, whilst enjoying the opportunity to shop, read reviews and compare prices."
